HAWKES, DOREEN JOANNE - The death of Doreen Joanne (Smith) Hawkes, age 70, of Kiwanis Nursing Home and formerly of Belleisle Creek, NB, occurred at Kiwanis Nursing Home, Sussex, NB, on Wednesday, February 25th, 2009. Doreen was the wife of the late Herb Hawkes and the daughter of the late Kenneth I. and Ruth (McLeod) Smith. Doreen was born in Penobsquis, the oldest of 8 children. She was a graduate of Sussex High School then Teacher's College in 1958 teaching in local schools until 1968 when she opted to stay home to raise her own family and many other families in the community. She took an interest in everybody and everything and kept up to date on what they were doing. Doreen enjoyed knitting, crocheting, cross stitch and almost any craft, passing her talent on to her children and friends, most recently to her friends at the nursing home. She is survived by her daughters, Wendy and Stephen Mallory of Berwick, Sally and Bob Pearson of Springfield, Jean Hawkes of Quispamsis and Lorna and Dwayne Blakney of Barnesville; grandchildren Stephanie, Darci, Cole, Claire and Brandon; sisters, Laurine and Arthur Raymond of Searsville and Nina and Albert Boyd of Kingston, ON; brothers, Lester and Caroline Smith of Lower Sackville, NS, Gary Smith of Truro, NS and Willard and Helena Smith of Penobsquis; and several nieces,nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her brothers, Stephen and Bob Smith. Arrangements were entrusted to Sherwood's Funeral Home and Life Tribute Center, (839-2156), 18 Scovil Road, Norton, NB, from where visiting was held. A celebration of Doreen's life was held from the funeral home on February 28th, 2009. Interment will be in St. Simon and St. Jude's Anglican Cemetery.
