MARGARET MADELINE GIBSON

GIBSON, MARGARET MADELINE - At Lincourt Manor, St. Stephen, NB, May 18, 2009, Margaret Madeline Gibson of St. Stephen, NB. She was the widow of the late Merle B. Gibson. Born in Upper Hampstead March 9, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Louisa (Slipp) McAlpine. Madeline was a graduate of Chipman Memorial Hospital School for Nurses (Class of 1937) and worked for many years at Chipman and Charlotte County Hospitals. She held various positions, such as night supervisor and nursing office supervisor. Madeline was among the original eight who organized the nurses union in 1969 as well as being a member of two negotiating teams. She was also a recipient of the Nurses Association of NB Award of Merit. Throughout her career she maintained a high standard of nursing. Madeline was well known in her later years for her beautiful and well maintained "Gibson Garden" at the traffic circle in St. Stephen. Her garden was visited by many, photographed, written about and acknowledged by awards. She was a member of the Girl Guides Association, Women's Institute, twenty five year member of the Hospital Auxiliary, Charlotte Gardeners, active member of the Charlotte County Nurses Alumnae and long time member of Kirk McColl United Church. She is survived by a son Wayne (Gilda) of St. Stephen, NB, a daughter, Mary Louise Peters (David) of St. Stephen, NB a grandson, Geoffrey Peters (Nadine) of Kentville NS, a granddaughter, Lesley Anne Peters of St. Stephen, NB and a great grandson, Nathan of St. Stephen, NB. She was predeceased by one sister, Helen McAlpine. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at 2 PM from the Kirk McColl United Church, King Street, St. Stephen, NB. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday, from 1 to 2 PM. Funeral arrangements in care of The S. O. Mehan & Son Funeral Home Ltd., 23 Main Street, St. Stephen, NB . Interment at St. Stephen, Rural Cemetery, St. Stephen, NB. For those who wish remembrances to Lincourt Manor, S.P.C.A. or charity of ones choice would be appreciated by the family.
