LAWRENCE RALPH MORSE

MORSE, LAWRENCE RALPH - With his loving family by his side, on Friday, August 7, 2009 Lawrence Morse of White Head Island passed away at the Grand Manan Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Born September 23, 1929, he was the son of the late Henry and Lillian (Cheney) Morse. Lawrence loved and raised his family on White Head Island with his loving wife Johanna by his side. He partnered with Clyne Zwicker working hard as a lobster fisherman and also in the smoked herring business. Upon retirement he excelled in his talent as a woodworking craftsmen building lighthouses, furniture, many other items and specialized in kitchen garbage boxes. Many homes in Canada from Vancouver to Newfoundland, in the United States from Maine to Florida and even England and Holland can boast of a fine craft made from "Gramps Island Crafts". He was a member of the White Head Baptist Church and will be sadly missed by his many friends. Over the years Lawrence and Johanna developed many deep and lasting friendships as they opened their home to family, friends and strangers. During Lawrence's illness his greatest enjoyment was in all the visits he received from family and friends far and near. Lawrence is survived by his wife of 57 years, Johanna (Mourik) Morse; one daughter, Doreen Christie (Chico) of Hampton, one son, Allen Morse (Sonya) of Grand Manan; his four grandchildren, Derek Christie (Radecia), Amanda Christie, Aaron and Trevor Morse; one brother Myron Morse (Karen); several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, Lawrence was predeceased by their infant son Brian Lawrence. Visiting will be held from the White Head Baptist Church on Sunday 2 to 4, and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will take place from the church on Monday August 10, 2009 at 2:15 pm with Pastor Jim Appleby officiating. The interment will follow at the White Head Community Cemetery.
