SMITH, NELLIE MAY - Nellie May Smith of Saint John passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, August 19, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Born 1931 in Saint John to the late Lee M. and Myrtle W. (Brown) Parks. Nellie was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend. A graduate of Saint John High School and Saint John Vocational School, she worked as a bookkeeper for many years, at the Riviera and Vito's, before retiring in 1996. She was a member of the RCL Branch # 69 Seniors Group; she enjoyed playing Bingo, taking bus trips, and yard sailing. Nellie is the last surviving member of her immediate family. Nellie overcame many challenges in her life and battled with courage and strength that is admired by her family. Nellie leaves behind her son G. Steven Smith (Mary Jane) of Saint John; daughter Ellen Mary Jane LaFleur (Leo) of Saint John; seven grandchildren Jeffrey, Krista, Danielle, Jennifer (Shawn), Jacqueline (Shawn), Leo and Stephanie (Dwayne); six great-grandchildren Aaron, Ethan, Seth - "The Boys", Joshua, Melissa and Baby MacLeod. Besides her parents, Nellie was predeceased by her son Todd Jarvis Smith; brothers Edward, Douglas and George Parks and sister Eva Ganong. Memorial service will be held from the Fundy Funeral Home Chapel, 230 Westmorland Rd. (646-2424) on Monday, August 24th at 11:00 a.m.; followed by a reception. Private family interment to take place at Greenwood Cemetery.
