THOMPSON, DR. JOHN GEORGE (JACK) - Born on December 29th, 1938 in New Glasgow, N.S., died on Saturday, September 19th, 2009 in the Saint John Regional Hospital surrounded by his family. Beloved husband and best friend of Lois. Survived by three loving sons and their families: Matt and Susie and grandson, Ethan Thompson of Bermuda; Dan and Kendra and grandsons, Alexander and Cameron Thompson of Toronto; and Tim Thompson of Calgary. Also survived by his aunt, Evelyn MacLean of Truro, his cousins, and their families. Predeceased in childhood by his parents, John George and Irma Thompson of Nova Scotia. Jack pursued undergraduate studies at Mount Allison University before graduating in dentistry from Dalhousie University in 1965, afterwards serving with the Royal Canadian Dental Corps for three years in Nova Scotia and Cyprus. Jack worked in public health clinics in Halifax before establishing a private dental practice, first in Rothesay, New Brunswick, and later from his home in Quispamsis, retiring in 2004. For ten years, Jack provided dental services for children at the Dr. Robert's Hospital School in Saint John. Jack was Executive Director Registrar of the New Brunswick Dental Society for twelve years and Executive Secretary of the Atlantic Provinces Academy of General Dentistry for ten years. He served on the National Dental Examining Board of Canada and was made a Fellow of the International College of Dentists as well as receiving several awards for meritorious service in dentistry during his career. Jack and Lois shared major interests, spending much time together working, traveling, hiking, making stained glass lamps and singing. Jack was a member of the Saint John Outdoor Enthusiasts and several choirs including Cantus, the Saint John Chorale, Colla Voce and Symphony New Brunswick Chorus, as well as serving on the Board of the New Brunswick Choral Federation for six years. Jack loved his family and friends as well as working around the old homestead overlooking the Kennebecasis River. Service details have not yet been finalized.
