MURPHY, JOHN ANTHONY - It is with great sadness that the family announce the death of John A. Murphy at the Saint John Regional Hospital, surrounded by his loving family on October 21, 2009 after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on March 13, 1929 in Saint John to the late Gervase and Kathleen (Shields) Murphy. During his career, John was an office and credit manager and worked for International Fertilizer, Nutrite and Genstar, retiring in 1984. He was a long time parishioner of St. Joachim's and St. Anne's Catholic Churches and was a great supporter of local charities including: Romero House, Meals On Wheels and many international charities. Devoted husband, father, grampy, grampy "GG", brother and friend; he enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his winter trips to Florida with Frances. Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his loving wife of 56 years, Frances (Milan) Murphy in March of 2008; sisters Frances Cooper and Mary Murphy and brothers Cyril, Paul and Father Lawrence Murphy. John is survived by his sons Douglas (Glenda), John A. (Katherine), Kevin (Alice) and Daniel (Anne) all of Saint John; daughters Kathleen Tobin (Richard), Patricia Brown (David) both of Saint John, Clare Burke (Earl) of Cape Breton, NS and Martina Murphy of Saint John; one brother Richard of Moncton; twenty grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and many friends. Resting at the Fundy Funeral Home 230 Westmorland Rd. (646-2424) with visitation on Thursday, October 22nd from 7-9 p.m. and Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Mass Of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, October 24th from St. Joachim's Catholic Church, 603 Loch Lomond Rd. at 10 a.m. Following the service a reception will be held at the church. Private family interment to take place at St. Joseph's Cemetery at a later date. Donations in John's memory may be made to the Romero House or charity of the donor's choice.
