JIM JAY

JAY, JIM - With heavy hearts, the family of Jim Jay announce his death on October 30, 2009 at the Saint John Regional Hospital after a short illness. Jim was born in Amersham, England, the son of Lucy Jay and James Brown and emigrated to Canada as a 17 year old boy in 1938 where he worked on a farm outside of Hamilton, Ontario. At the outbreak of World War II, he joined the Canadian Army where he served throughout Europe as a Signals Officer with the Royal Hamilton Light Infantry. On his release from the military in 1946, Jim settled in Saint John where he worked in the electrical trade and as an instructor in the Electrical Apprenticeship Program. In 1961, he began a teaching career at Simonds High School where he taught electricity and electronics until his retirement in 1986. Jim was a pioneer in Solar Energy and, in his retirement, built two solar collectors at his home in Lakewood Heights. He was a regular at the Canada Games Aquatic Centre where he enjoyed working out and soaking in the hot tub discussing politics. Jim was predeceased by his wife Jean, daughter Theresa, and son-in-law Larry Hanley and his parents, brother Charles, and sister Emily in England. He is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Bennett of Vancouver, BC and Sandra Lane and son-in-law, Jim, Brenda Hanley (Larry Mason) of Saint John, and Ruth Coleman (Rev. Ed) whom Jim always considered another daughter, as well as 6 grandchildren: Shannon Bennett (Durrell Kapan), James Bennett (Tina), Seamus Hanley (Trudy), Andrew Lane (Jean Marie Dionne), Lise Driscoll (Steve), and Devon Edmonds (Dan) and 9 great grandchildren: Kelly, Lauren, and Jenna Bennett, Jay and Ava Driscoll, Nathan and Oliver Lane, Megan Hanley, and Anika Kapan. Jim was a man of faith who was very active in the parish life of St. James Lakewood Anglican Church for more than 45 years. He was a great family man who enjoyed large family gatherings and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Jim's love of life, generosity, and feelings for others will be missed by all. Resting at Fundy Funeral Home, 230 Westmorland Road, Saint John (646-2424) with visitations on Sunday and Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will be held from St. James Lakewood Anglican Church on Tuesday November 3, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
