HICKS, NANCY GWEN - After a courageous struggle with cancer it is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nancy Gwen Hicks on Thursday, November 19th, 2009 in Oromocto. She was born on June 19th, 1953 and leaves her dear father Elmer, sister Donna (Gallant) and husband Pierre and their children Erika and Sabrina; brother Timothy and Kathy (Tosh) and their children Neville, Hillary and Elliott. Predeceased by her beloved mother Phyllis Hicks. Nancy will also be dearly missed by her pet dog Oliver, affectionately known as "Ollie". She is also survived by many close cousins and relatives. During her teenage years Nancy underwent a number of major surgeries at the Montreal Neurological Hospital. With the strength of her parents and family she overcame many obstacles and went on to complete an undergraduate and Master's Degree in Education at UNB. Nancy was a teacher for many years at Summerhill Elementary School in Oromocto before she retired two years ago as a result of her illness. She was a beloved teacher of many students who will be remembered for her dedication to her love of teaching, art, drama and her compassion and commitment to the development of so many children. Teaching was her love and vocation. Many former students would remember the end of the year pool party, the plays at the drama festival, and the line up on Halloween for her famous candy apples. Nancy was a talented artist and painter who was well known at the Fredericton Craft Show for her tole paintings. She was also a talented musician who taught and played the piano, and also enjoyed the accordion with much enthusiasm at many events with her friends and family. Besides being a talented artist, Nancy was an excellent cook and loved to bake. Her cookies were famous in Oromocto and everyone always looked forward to her home cooking and delicious meals. Nancy loved her cottage at Maquapit Lake and enjoyed many summers with her family at the Lake. She loved to be surrounded by her family and friends and making sure they were well looked after. Nancy was a very giving and loving person who will be dearly missed. Her strength and commitment to caring for her mom and dad will be cherished forever. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Nancy Gwen Hicks Memorial Fund, which will provide financial assistance to local SPCA's in perpetuity. Visitation will be held at Oromocto Select Community Funeral Home, 108 Winnebago St., Oromocto on Saturday, November 21st, 2009 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. The memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 22nd at St. John's Anglican Church, 60 Broad Road, Oromocto at 3 pm with Rev. Keith Howlett officiating.
