BENHAM, LOIS IRENE - Mrs. Lois Irene Benham passed away at her home in Castalia, Grand Manan Island under the care of her family on November 22, 2009 after a three year period of failing health. Born in Galt, Ontario on March 19, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Alice (Atkinson) Dakin. Lois attended McMaster University where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Languages. Following university she married Leslie in 1950. During their years together in Galt, Lois was very involved with the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church alongside of her husband. She was also an active member of the Galt Camera Club for many years. In 1995 her daughter was a strong influence in making a decision to move to Grand Manan Island to enjoy the later years of her life. Painting and art were a large part of her life as well and gave her much enjoyment. Also she co-authored five published children's books with her husband Leslie. She is survived by her husband Mr. Leslie Benham and her daughter Arlene both of Castalia, Grand Manan Island. Visiting hours will be held from Ells Funeral Home on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The funeral service will be held from the funeral home on Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at 1:30 pm with Rev. Captain Dana Dean officiating. Interment will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery.
