WHALEN, JULIA MARY - The death of Julia Mary (Weston) Whalen of Fredericton, wife of James M. Whalen occurred on Monday, December 7, 2009. Born in London, England on 23 May, 1936, she was the daughter of the late John Conleth Weston and Violet Mary Harding. Julia was a newspaper reporter in Britain for 12 years working on various weekly, daily and national newspapers including The Scotsman in Edinburgh for five years before immigrating to Canada in 1970. In Toronto, she helped start a community newspaper and also worked as a correspondent for the London Sunday Times. Moving to Ottawa in 1972, she worked as a freelance writer but also enrolled part-time at Carleton University's School of Journalism graduating with first class honors in 1978. From 1982-1992, she was a staff writer for University Affairs- the national magazine of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). After leaving AUCC, she again worked as a freelance writer and contributed articles to a variety of professional and special interest publications. In 2001, Julia and her husband, left Ottawa and moved to Fredericton where she was living at the time of her death. Julia is survived by her husband James Whalen; her aunt, Jane Harding of Ealing, England; several brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law, Edward J. Whalen, John A. Whalen, David J. Whalen, M. Catharine McLaughlin and William I. Whalen. No visitation by request. A service of remembrance for the late Julia Mary Whalen will be held from Holy Family Parish Church, Hanwell Road, on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 11:00 am with Rev. J.J. Dolan officiating.
