Donald R. MacKay, 98, of St. Peter’s passed away peacefully at Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s on February 17, 2009.
Born in Kingsville on March 8, 1911, Donald was the son of the late Angus and Mary (MacDonald) MacKay.
In his early years, Donald worked in mines in Quebec and Northern Ontario.
He served his country proudly with the 1st Field Company, RCE Regina Rifles.
After the war, Donald and his first wife, Margaret (MacDonald) settled in Brantford, Ont. where he worked for 3M corporation.
Later they moved to Moncton, N.B., where he was employed with the CNR.
At age 72, Donald moved to St. Peter’s upon marriage to Marjorie (MacDonald) MacKenzie.
Donald’s life (and theirs) was enriched by the addition of children; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was very proud of them all and was a wonderful supporter of the grandchildrens’ journeys in highland dancing, piping and fiddling.
Donald was a fluent Gaelic speaker and had vast knowledge of Scottish history , Scottish lore and most especially, family ancestry... a true “Sloighneadh”.
Donald was an avid gardener and his flower beds and neatly trimmed yard, were a joy to behold.
Donald is survived by his wife, Marjorie (MacDonald-MacKenzie) and his stepchildren, Dianne (Conrad) Landry, Sampsonville; Marjorie “Mimi” (Charles) Blinn, Lower Sackville, Ian (Mary) MacKenzie, Little Narrows, Rosemary (Mac) MacIsaac, St. Peter’s, Joan (Allan) MacDonald, New Glasgow, Lt. Col. Ken (Carole) MacKenzie, Ottawa, Major Allan (Celia) MacKenzie, Halifax. His grandchildren, Martha (Troy) Allen, MacKenzie Landry, John and Maisie Sampson, Matt and Veronica MacIsaac, Marsalie and Alison MacKenzie and Freya MacKenzie and three great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters, Mary Hardie, Port Hawkesbury, Florence Graham, Judique; sister-in-law, Madeline MacKay, Judique and brother, Alex Francis MacKay, Kingsville; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Donald was predeceased by his first wife, Margaret and brothers, Dan, Peter, John A. Jimmy and Joe.
Donald was a devout Catholic and member of St. Peter’s parish and St. Anthony’s Guild. He was recently bestowed with a life membership to the CN Pensioner’s Club. He belonged to the Clan MacKay Society and the Order of Good Cheer.
Visitation will be held today (Thursday) from 2- 9 p.m. and Friday morning from 10 a.m. until 12 noon at Alex Morrison Funeral Home, St. Peter’s. Visitation at St. Mary of the Angels Church in Glendale from 2 p.m. until time of funeral at 3 p.m., Friday, Feb. 20, 2009 with Fr. Everett MacDow officiating.
Donations may be made to St. Mary of the Angels Parish Cemetery Fund.
Donald’s family would like to sincerely thank the Richmond Home Support workers, the wonderful staff at St. Anne Community Health Care Centre, Arichat and Richmond Villa, St. Peter’s for the loving and excellent care given him. God bless you all.
