Gladys Belle Williams, 95 of Louisbourg, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2009 in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
She was the daughter of the late Artamus Levy and Gertrude (Hershman) (Levy) Cleveland, and stepdaughter of the late Donald Cleveland, all of Indian Harbour, Halifax.
Gladys was a member of Stella Maris Parish, Louisbourg and a lifelong member of the Stella Maris Catholic Woman’s League, Louisbourg, serving for a number of years as a member of the executive including president. She had worked in her earlier years at the local fish plants. She enjoyed a good game of cards, including 45s and cribbage.
Gladys is survived by her devoted husband, John ‘Jackie’ Thomas Williams, Louisbourg; daughter, Ruby Berringer, Dartmouth; grandson John (Janet) Berringer and great-granddaughter Loanna Berringer, all of Fall River. She is also survived by sisters, Effie (Levy) Fiander; Annie (Cleveland) Smith; brothers Harold and Keith (Cleveland), all of the Halifax area. Also surviving is sister-in-law, Sadie (Williams) Parsons, Main-a-Dieu and many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband, John Patrick Leo Williams, Louisbourg; brothers, Raymond and Roland Cleveland and sisters, Dora (Levy) Kane and Hilda (Cleveland) O’Neill, Indian Harbour and son-in-law, Gordon Berringer, Dartmouth.
Visitation for Gladys Williams will take place Sunday, Feb. 22 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Stella Maris Church, Louisbourg. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 11 a.m. on February 23 in Stella Maris Church with Fr. Patrick O’Neill officiating. During the visitation and following the funeral the C.W.L. will provide refreshments. Family flowers only please.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Stella Maris parish or a charity of choice.
