Albenie Bernard
Albenie Bernard 1907 - 2003 Albenie Bernard, 96, of Moncton Veteran's Health Center, formerly of Dieppe, passed away on Thursday, August 14, 2003 at his residence. Born in Egmont Bay, PE, on May 5, 1907, he was the son of the late Azade and the late Madeleine (née: Arsenault) Bernard. He had worked at No. 5 Supply Depot as a forklift operator, had been a member of the Canadian Legion Branch #6, the North Nova Scotia Highlander's Memory Club, Amherst, NS, the Club d'Age d'Or de Dieppe and a parishioner of Ste. Thérèse Roman Catholic Church. He loved sports, enjoyed and was a member of dart and bowling leagues and was also an avid card player: cribbage, 200 and whist. He had a strong devotion to his family, delighted in meeting people, was an avid outdoors man, enjoyed long walks, gardening, trout fishing and clam digging. In 1942, Mr Bernard joined the army in Saint John, NB, where he had been working at the time, he served overseas in Scotland with the Forestry Corp for six months before returning home; he then joined the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and returned overseas to France, Holland, Belgium and Germany. On the battlefield in Germany, he learned the news that the war was over, eight months passed before he returned home. Since retirement, Albenie and his wife enjoyed traveling, having taken several organized bus tours to all provinces in Canada except Newfoundland and to several states as far south as Florida. Mr. Bernard is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Irene (née: Cormier); one daughter, Sylvia (Gerry) Mills of Dieppe; three sons, Roland, Vincent (Wendy), both of Moncton and Denis (Liette) of Memramcook; one brother, Emmanuel (Bessie) of Quispamsis; six grandchildren, Daniel, Jason, Ginette, Monique, Jesse and Sebastien as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. He was predeceased by one son, Paul; three sisters, Julitte, Marie-Anne and Denise and also by eight brothers, Philip, Emilien, Antonet, Edmond, Joseph, Johnny, Cyrien and Francois (killed in France on the battlefield - NNSH). Visitation will be held from the Chartersville Funeral Home, 363 Amirault Street, Dieppe, 857-1901, on Friday, August 15, 2003 from 2 to 4 and from 7 to 9 pm and on Saturday from 10 am until time of departure. Funeral Mass will be celebrated from Ste. Thérèse Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, August 16, 2003 at 11 am. Interment in Notre-Dame-du-Calvaire Cemetery, Dieppe, NB. The veteran's will be holding a prayer service on Friday at 7 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Veteran's Health Center would be appreciated.
