Melvin S. Martin 1935 - 2003 The death of Mel Martin, age 67, of Riverview and Pointe du Chene occurred at the Spencer Memorial Home on Wednesday, October 8, 2003. Mel had been in declining health since suffering a brain aneurysm in December 1996. Born in Kouchibouguac on November 18, 1935, he was the twin son of the late Marion (Thurrott) and Kenneth Martin. He was raised in Richibucto, NB and moved to Moncton to take employment with the CNR in the Provident Fund Office of the Accounting Department. From there he pursued a career in the insurance industry with his final position being Branch Manager of Lindsey Morden Claim Services Ltd. in Moncton. He was a Fellow of the Insurance Institute of Canada; served as Vice President of (NB) Maritime Insurance Adjusters Association and a member of the Honorable Order of Blue Goose International. Mel also served for over thirty years with the Canadian Armed Forces Reservists and retired in 1991 as Brigadier General commanding the Atlantic Militia Area. He was awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Medal and the Canadian Forces Decoration. He was a life honourary member of the Riverview Veterans and Armed Forces Association, life member of the Garrison Officers' Mess and honourary member of the United Services Institute as well as several other military associations. Any spare time was spent enjoying his cabin cruiser and cottage life. He was an executive member of the Shediac Bay Yacht Club and a founding shareholder of Pointe du Chene Marina where he also served in several positions on the Board of Directors. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Elizabeth (Perry); son, Lance (Jeanne Morey); daughter, Shawne (Brent) Ross; son, Ken (Darlene); twin brother, Malcolm (Corinne); and grandchildren, Sara and Rebecca Morey, Sean and Brian Ross, Amanda and Michael Gilbert and great grandson, Jeremy Prosser and by several nieces and nephews. The family will be receiving visitors at the Riverview Funeral Home 214 Pine Glen Rd. Riverview on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9. The Funeral Service will be held at St. Paul's United Church Cleveland Ave. Riverview on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Steve Berube officiating. The Riverview Veterans and Armed Forces Association will conduct their service at the Riverview Funeral Home on Tuesday, October 14, 2003 at 6:45 pm. The Family will be receiving relatives and friends in the church hall immediately following the funeral service on Wednesday.
