Mary Cecilia "Cil" DeCoste, 81, Truro. (Formerly of Debert and Brookfield)
It is with broken hearts we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother and grandmother on Friday, Feb. 27, 2009 at the Halifax Infirmary, QEII, surrounded by her loving children.
Born May 3, 1927 in New Victoria, Cape Breton, she was the eldest child of the late John Dan "Francis Hector" and Mary Ann (Michael B. "Soldier" MacDonald) MacNeil. (New Waterford)
Mom came to Truro from her home in Cape Breton 62 years ago. In Truro, she met her husband, the late Arthur Eugene DeCoste. She was employed at The Open Kitchen and Stanfields. Throughout her life, Mom was totally devoted to her family, especially when her grandchildren came along. For many years, she was a caregiver to her mother and father. She enjoyed family times and numerous trips each summer back to her beloved Cape Breton. Very knowledgeable in her family history, she instilled a strong sense of pride in all of us for our Cape Breton heritage. Talks of her youth in Cape Breton always reverted back to her summers spent in Grand Narrows with her cousins at her grandmother MacDonald's. She was a member of the Highland Village Society, Iona and a proud member of the Clan MacNeil. Everyone always looked forward to her biscuits and bannock, which will never be duplicated.
Cil is survived by son Daniel "Dan" (Peggy), Debert; daughters Betty (Barry) Merlin, Hilden; Doris (Dave) Anderson, Truro; grandchildren James DeCoste, South Korea; Jennifer Merlin, Truro; Heidi Anderson, Truro; sisters Irene, Catherine, Josephine, Rhodena; brothers Daniel, Michael, Ambrose; 26 nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was also predeceased by sister Elizabeth; brother Angus Jerome in infancy.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young St., Truro.
As was her request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Her cremated remains will be interred in her beloved Cape Breton at a later date. Donations in Cil's memory to Colchester Regional Hospital Foundation or a charity of choice are welcomed.
