Charles Edgar MacKean, age 97, of Highland Drive, New Glasgow, died peacefully at home, in his sleep on February 28, 2009.
Born in Bisbee, Arizona, he was the son of the late Edwin and Irene (Nichols) MacKean.
He spent his youth at Island, East River, where the family later resided. Edgar worked at the D.M. MacDonald Factory, and during the war was a machine operator at Trenton Steel. For 17 years, Edgar and his wife Nan owned and operated a garage and grocery at High Street, Trenton. Later for nine years, they operated a Petro-Fina Service Station at South Foord Street, Stellarton. Edgar was a well-known and respected automobile mechanic. Several gifts from Petro-Fina included a plaque inscribed \"For outstanding service station operation.\" Edgar retired in 1975 and enjoyed a wood working hobby making some of the equipment including a drill press, saw table and planer. He also enjoyed skating. For many years, Edgar and his wife Nan enjoyed old time dancing. Edgar was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, New Glasgow and a former member of Springville Presbyterian Church.
Edgar is survived by his best friend and devoted wife of 66 years, Annie Lillian \"Nan\" (Robertson); sister-in-law, Helen MacKean, Stellarton; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by a sister, Margaret Loveridge; brothers, Cecil and Clifford; sister-in-law, Alice MacKean; and brothers-in-law, Ed Loveridge and Hugh Robertson; and niece, Nancy Lynch.
Respecting Edgar’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private committal service will be held at a later date at Hopewell Cemetery with Rev. Richard Sand of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church officiating. Arrangements are entrusted to Eagles Funeral Home, Westville.
