Anastasios (Tasos) Markides 1941 - 2005 FREDERICTON, NB - The family of Tasos Markides is saddened to announce that he passed away on April 8, 2005, in Fredericton, NB after a long illness. Anastasios was born in Chalki, Greece on February 26, 1941. He was predeceased by his mother and father (Ketie and Dimitrius Markides), and a twin brother, John. Tasos will be sadly missed by his wife, Bari (Colwell) of Fredericton; daughter, Leslie Ann Harris; son-in-law, Peter; granddaughters, Anastasia and Sydney Ann of Lower Sackville, NS; brother, Stelio (Mary) of New York; sister, Marianthi of San Diego, California; his sister-in-law, Sophie Markides of Saint John; and several loving nieces, nephews, and grand nephews. A devoted father and grandfather, Poppi spent his free time with his family. Gardening and bug hunting with his two granddaughter's was his great joy. Tasos came to Canada in 1958, where he began his pursuit of his life long passion- Cooking. He became a life member of the Canadian Federation of Chefs and Cooks, as well as a member of the local C.C.F. Fredericton branch. Tasos worked with both provincial and federal governments on accreditation curriculum for future chef's. He was acknowledged by the local branch of the C.C.F, when they created a Tasos Markides Chef of the Year Award presented for dedication to culinary professionalism. Upon retiring from the Sheraton, as the executive chef, he operated Tasos Gourmet Ltd. During his life Tasos achieved many awards and accolades. He was passionate about his profession and his love of people. Tasos prepared sumptuous creations for such dignitaries as Queen Elizabeth, Prince Charles, Princess Anne and several leading politicians. Pride for his community led Tasos to become involved with several charities. He often donated his time and services to such organizations as Canadian Cancer Society, Unicef, Children's Wish Foundation, Paraplegic Society and Partner's for Youth. Resting at Bishop's Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton with visitation on Monday evening from 7 to 9 pm and Tuesday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. The Funeral Service will be held from Bishop's Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 2:00 pm with Venerable John Sharpe officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.
