William Reid McManus
William Reid McManus MEMRAMCOOK, NB - William Reid McManus of Memramcook passed away at the Sackville Memorial Hospital on Wednesday June 8, 2005 at the age of 91. Born in Memramcook, he was the son of the late Edward McManus and the late Faustina Sullivan. He was educated (B.A. and B.ED 1935) at St-Joseph's College (later merged in Universite de Moncton). He was a land surveyor and was fascinated with birds since his youth. His dream of a career in Ornithology was thwarted by the Great Depression, but he kept notes on local bird sightings, often on a daily basis, alongside his work on local family properties (farm, sawmill, lumbering, real estate). With prosperity after 1963, bird watching became a nearly full time avocation for him, and that continued to the present, despite age-enforced limits on mobility. Most of his observations were in the Memramcook Valley, especially around Memramcook Village and Memramcook Lake. Later he shifted focus to migrating shorebirds at Grand Anse (aka Johnson Mills), beyond Dorchester Cape. He was a member of the Trustee School Board of Moncton, Chinecto Naturalist Club and Knights of Columbus. He attended Mount Allison University and learned Spanish and German. He is survived by a very special friend, Mary O'Rourke; one sister, Sister Ann McManus of Halifax; and by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Edward and William. Resting at Dupuis Funeral Home with visiting hours on Thursday, June 9 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm and Friday June 10 from 9:30 to 10:30 am. Funeral will be held on Friday, June 10, 2005 at 11:00 am at St-Thomas de Memramcook Roman Catholic Church, StJoseph. Interment will be held in the Parish cemetery. Arrangements are in care of Dupuis Funeral Home, Memramcook.
