Rev. Harold R. King UPPER
Rev. Harold R. King UPPER CAPE, NB - The Rev. Harold Robert King, BA, BDiv, BTh., left this earth to join in the rest and joy of his saviour Jesus during the afternoon of the 17th of October. There to support, encourage and comfort him in his last of the good fight was his wife of 44 years, Marilyn (Balser) and their two sons, David and Harold James, and Holly and Wally. Looking back on Harold R.'s life, it was a great one, full of love, passion, laughter and satisfaction. A proud Newfoundlander, born in Carbonear in 1937 of Harold B. and Bessie (Penny) King, he enjoyed both St. John's and Halifax growing up. From his beginning it seemed inevitable that he would enter into the ministry, so after attending Dalhousie University for his BA, he then entered Pine Hill Divinity Hall and received his B. Div. in 1961, and was ordained in the United Church of Canada that same year. Along the way, while serving in one of his many summer mission fields, Harcourt to be exact, he met and fell in love with Marilyn Balser of Moncton. They were wed in Moncton in 1961 as well. All in all, 1961 was a super year for HR. Harold R. loved the United Church, and was honoured and privileged to have served in: Bayfield-Little Shemogue (twice!) and the Welsford-Browns Flat Pastoral Charges, J. Welsey Smith Memorial United Church, Halifax; Oromocto-Pine Grove Charge and St. Paul's in Westville, NS. He also served the larger Church and Community in various ways through Presbytery, Conference and National appointments. He will be remembered as a great and thoughtful preacher, whose well crafted words touched many, and also as a wonderful church organist and singer with a wonderful baritone voice. Music, and books, were indeed two of his passions in life, as well as being a world traveler around much of God's creation. While a blessed man in having a calling that he loved and was able to fulfill, HR was even more blessed by the love he experienced in his lifetime from so many - his wife and sons, his daughters-in-law, his grandchildren - Danielle, HJ Alexander, Erica, Joshua, Alyssa, Brianna and Hannah - all of whom he loved dearly and took great pride in, no matter how 'rascally' they might be. He is survived by his brother, Dr. Wilson (Ethel) King, Truro, NS; Jennie (Angus) Bartlett, Huron, OH, and Phyllis (George) West, Ft. Myers, FL; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sister, Hazel. Harold's remains are resting at Jones Funeral Home, 3 W. Main St., Port Elgin, NB, with visitation Wednesday 7 to 9pm, and Thursday 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. The celebration of HR's life and ministry will be held Friday, 21 October 2005 at the Sackville United Church, Sackville, NB. Because of his final health struggles, donations are requested in his memory to further the work of the Parkinson Society of Canada or the Bayfield-Little Shemogue Pastoral Charge. It was a great life, Dad. Enjoy the crown you have rightly won - Christ's Peace! www.jonesfuneralhome.ca
