Edna Harriet Barnett

Edna Harriet Barnett DAUPHIN, MB - Edna Harriet Barnett, age 96 years of Dauphin, MB passed away after a brief illness at the Dauphin Regional Health Centre on Monday, December 19, 2005. Edna was born in Fork River, MB on December 12, 1909, eldest daughter of Francis (Frank) and Edna Hafenbrak (nee King). After completing her education at Fork River and Mossey River Schools, she attended normal school in Dauphin, graduating in 1929, she received her permanent 2nd class teacher's certificate in 1932. Edna taught at various schools in Manitoba including Pine View, Skala, Magnet, Dane McCarthy and Molesworth (Glenella). Following her marriage to Eian in 1935, they lived on a farm three miles south of Magnet. When Eian went to work for B.F. Goodrich Tire Co. in Kitchener, ON, Edna and her two boys moved to Magnet. Later Edna and Eian owned and operated the General Store in Magnet for 14 years, where Edna was also the Postmistress. After selling the store they moved to Rorketon and Eian worked for the Manitoba Department of Highways. When Eian passed away in 1981, Edna moved in to Dauphin and resided in Kinsman Villa for the last 23 years. Edna enjoyed curling in the winter and gardening in the summer, as well as helping out at community events while in Rorketon. At the Kinsman Villa she enjoyed playing cards and bingo in the evenings and was reportedly very good at shuffle board. Edna also played the piano and her students at Magnet will remember the School Christmas Concerts she organised each year. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting. Her colourful afghan blanket and doilies were given freely to relatives, friends and charities. Edna was predeceased by her husband, Eian in 1982; son, Francis in 2002; brothers, Ernest King in 1983 and Tom in 2003; and daughter-in-law, Doreen Barnett in 2005. Surviving is one son, Stan Barnett of Riverview, NB; one sister, Ann Hunt of High Bluff, MB; seven grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren; also many nieces, nephews and extended family. Services will be held at a later date. Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Service have care of the arrangements, phone (204) 638-4110.
