Robert Chesley Tait Stewart HALIFAX, NS - Robert Chesley Tait Stewart, Summer resident of Economy NS, passed away Thursday, January 19, 2006 in the VG Hospital. Born in Shediac, NB, he was the son of the late William and Minnie Lockewood (Tait) Stewart. With his banker father, his family lived at different times in Moncton, Saint John, Yarmouth, Montreal, Brantford, and Halifax. During WWII, Bob joined the R.C.A.F., earning his pillot's wings in 1945. After the war, he returned to McGill University where he graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1949. He had a lengthy engineering career in the construction industry. He worked for many years with Cameron Contracting Ltd., becoming president of the company in 1963, and chairman in 1975. He later worked on development of several retail shopping complexes, first with Willowgate Development, and later with Fairport Construction. Upon reaching retirement, Bob launched a second career in hospital construction, working for architects of the Veterans Memorial Building at Camp Hill and the Grace Maternity Hospital, and later for the Department of Health on construction of the South Shore Regional Hospital and other hospital expansions across the province. Bob was active in his industry, serving as President of the Halifax Dartmouth Construction Association, and the Construction Association of Nova Scotia; National President of the Canadian Construction Association, and Chairman of the Canadian Industry Development Council, Ottawa. He served on the Minister's Advisory Council of Industry, Trade and Commerce, and on the Committee on Construction Research of the National Research Council. He was a member of the Engineering Institute of Canada and a life member of The Association of Professional Engineers of the Province of Nova Scotia. Bob was a former govenor and chair of the Building Committee of Mount Saint Vincent University, and a member of Rockingham United Church for almost 50 years, serving on the Board of Trustees for many years. He is survived by his wife Catherine (Huntley) and son, William (Wendy), Liverpool, NS; grandchildren, Scott and Erin; sister, Barbara (Murray) Christensen, Shediac, NB and Florida. Cremation has taken place. Memorial service will be held 7 pm Sunday January 22, 2006 in Rockingham United Church. Rev. Martin Reid officiating. Reception to follow in church hall. Interment at a later date in Shediac, NB.
