Leonard (Len) Joseph Newcombe MM
Leonard (Len) Joseph Newcombe MM AMHERST, NS - Leonard (Len) Joseph Newcombe MM, age 89, of Amherst passed away Sunday, May 7, 2006 at Victoria Manor, Amherst, NS. Born in Leicester, he was a son of the late Simon Richard and Bessie (Bird) Newcombe. Len was a veteran of World War II where he served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders and was a recipient of the Military Medal for bravery. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 10, Amherst. Len worked at the Amherst Pant Factory and then for Enamel Heating in Amherst until retirement. He was a avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed his garden and trees. He is survived by his life long companion and friend, Jean Hewitt; her daughter, Sandra (Fintan) Hickey of Ottawa; grandson, Sean (Katherine) Hickey of London, England; granddaughter, Lynette (Scott) Beck of Bourget, Ontario and great granddaughter, Bailie Beck. He is also survived by a brother, Henry (Ethel) of Victoria, BC and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Len was predeceased by his sister, Bessie Madore. Visitation will be at Campbell's Funeral Home, 98 Church Street, Amherst (667-9906) on Thursday from 2 to 4 p.m. The Royal Canadian Legion will hold its service on Friday, May 12, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Campbell's Chapel followed immediately by the funeral service with Rev. Byron Corkum officiating. Interment will take place in the Amherst Cemetery at a later date.
