Stan McGrath

Stan McGrath 1921 - 2006 Stan McGrath, 85, of Moncton, passed away on Wednesday, August 2nd, 2006, at the Dr Georges L-Dumont Hospital following a brave battle with Colon Cancer. He will be lovingly missed by his wife Corinne (Bourque) of 55 years; his daughter, Catherine and son-in-law, Glenn of Vancouver; his son, Eric and daughter-in-law, Bonnie of Fredericton; his grand-daughter, Mellissa of Halifax; his sisters, Joan Blakney and Betty Trueman (brother-in-law Doug) and his brother, Gerry (sister-in-law Stella), all of Moncton; his step grand-sons, Chris and Adrian of St. John; his step grand-children, Nova, Brie and Lorne of Vancouver; his great grand-children; as well as many nieces and nephews. Stan was predeceased by his brothers, John, of Moncton, Jim, of Ontario, and his sister, Kit Pierson, of New York. Stan was born and educated in St. John's, Newfoundland and he was the son of James and Annie McGrath. Stan was a Veteran of World War II and joined the 59th Newfoundland Heavy Regiment as a teenager. He was Commissioned in the field at the age of 22 and saw action in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Stan came to Moncton to live in 1945 shortly after receiving an Honourable Discharge from the Armed Forces. He was employed with London Live Insurance Company in 1952 and retired in 1983 as District Sales Manager. Stan enjoyed the quality of life the city Moncton had to offer and he was an active community volunteer for over 50 years, serving on over thirty different committees and charitable organizations including; Past President of the Moncton Life Underwriters, Past President and on the Board of Directors for St. Patrick's Family Centre, Past President of the New Brunswick Soccer Association and Past President for the Moncton Chapter of the MS Society. Stan was also on the Board of Directors for the East End Boys & Girls Club, Chairman of the Board of Directors for the Lions Senior Citizen Committee and on many other committees that included the Moncton Central Business Development Bureau, the Coliseum Arena Committee, the Miss Moncton Pageant, the Bus Committee, Railroad Days, the Moncton Band Festival and the Moncton Santa Claus Parade. Stan had always shown a keen interest in Municipal politics and was elected to Moncton City Council in 1980 as a Ward II Councilor and re-elected in 1983. He did not re-offer in 1986 but left the door open to return to politics again. He did so in 1989 and was elected as Councilor-at-Large and re-elected in 1992 and in 1995. He also served as Deputy Mayor for one term. For those who knew Stan he was a man known for his honesty, fairness, sincerity, dedication and accountability. Stan will be resting at Cadman Bowness Funeral Home, 114 Alma St. with visiting hours on Thursday, August 3rd from 7:00 to 9:00 pm and Friday, August 4th from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. The Funeral Mass will be held at St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church, 43 Botsford Street, on Saturday, August 5th at 10:00 am with Father Allison Carroll officiating. A reception will follow in the Church basement. Interment will follow at the Shediac Catholic Cemetery, 415 Main Street, Shediac. In Stan's memory, donations to the Moncton Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society or to the Dr. George-L-Dumont Hospital Palliative Care Unit would be appreciated. He was a loving father and husband and an all- around great man. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Those special years will not return When we were all together But with the love within our hearts You will walk with us forever.
