Vera D. O'Connor

Vera D. O'Connor 1916 - 2006 Vera D. O'Connor, 90, of Moncton, with her family at her side, passed away peacefully at her residence on Sunday, November 26th, 2006. Born in Leiston, Suffolk, England, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Hilda (Baker) Licence. Vera lived on Hartsford Road, Shepards Bush SW12 and attended Wendell Park School, finishing in 1930 at 14 years of age, went to work at Bradleys Clothing Store for women learning the trade of a seamstress and worked there until the start of World War II in 1939. During the war years, she worked for London Passenger Transit Board. She was also a member of the Women's Home Guard Auxiliary where learning Morse Code and qualifying on the rifle at Bisley were part of her training. She married a Canadian Serviceman, Charles O'Connor on the 23rd of December 1943, embarked for Canada in 1946 as a war bride on the Aquitania along with many others. Arriving in Halifax, and spending the first night off shore as they could not dock due to the heavy fog. She arrived in Moncton by train at 2 am on the 26th of September, 1946. While in her new country she and Charles operated a Convenience Store for a few years on Botsford Street. In later years she worked for Dalmy's as a seamstress for many years and also made an altered clothing at home for many people. Her life in Canada was mainly that of a housewife, which she enjoyed while raising her two children, Donald and Linda. Later on she enjoyed spending time with her Grandson Aaron. She loved to cook, tend to her flowers and spend time with the cats, dogs and birds who were fortunate to come under her care. Vera was a true mother and friend with her love and especially that special smile to all who knew her. She never asked for herself but gave all the love and kindness to others first. To all who knew her she will be truly missed. Vera will be sadly missed by her daughter, Linda O'Connor (Wayne), Moncton; son, Donald (Linda), Moncton; grandson, Aaron; sister-in-Law, Eileen Sullivan, Moncton; nephews, Michael (Judy), David, Roger, and Peter one niece Diane. Predeceased by her husband, Charles O'Connor (1993); and brothers, Aubrey, and Victor. Visitation at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Tuesday, November 28th, 2006 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm. Vigil Prayer Service on Tuesday, November 28th, 2006 at 8:30 pm. Funeral Service at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home Chapel Wednesday, November 29th, 2006, at 2 pm. Rev. Phil Mulligan officiating. Reception following the service. Interment, Holy Ghost Catholic Cemetery, Hopewell Hill.
