Melda Bennett, age 69 of 5th Street, Glace Bay passed away at home on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 surrounded by her family.
Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late John ‘Jack’ and Mary (Wilson) McGrath.
Melda was a member of St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. She worked at Mike’s Lunch for 15 years and at one time belonged to the ladies Tuesday night bowling league.
Melda enjoyed cooking and gardening; but most of all she will be remembered for her compassionate and caring nature towards her family and friends.
Melda is survived by her husband, Tom Bennett; two daughters, Michele (Alex) Gillis, Glace Bay and Alison (Richard) Trumble, Dartmouth, N.S. She is also survived by one brother, Woodrow ‘Doe’, Glace Bay; one sister, Mary ‘Kay’ Meston (Alex), Glace Bay; four grandchildren, Alex Jr., Sean Michael, Brandon, Jaxon; nieces, nephews and a special niece, Krista Rafferty.
Melda was predeceased by two brothers, Michael ‘Sheb’, William ‘Chick’, grandson, Matthew; a sibling in infancy and by three sisters-in-law, Helen, Rita and Lorna McGrath; two nephews, Charles and Brucie McGrath.
Visitation will be held on Friday evening from 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass, officiated by Rev. Patrick O’ Neill, will be celebrated on Saturday morning at 11 a.m. in St. John’s Church, Glace Bay. Cremation to follow with burial in the parish cemetery at a later date. Reception to be held in the parish hall.
As an expression of sympathy for Melda, donations in her memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Palliative Care.
