Rev. Alexander James Farquhar Rev. Alexander James Farquhar, 81, native of Brooklyn, Hants County, Nova Scotia, son of the late Judge Hiram and Eva (Dimock) Farquhar, died in Halifax on Sunday, March 9th, 2008. He leaves his beloved wife of 58 years, Glennis (Lamb), Halifax; a brother, Rev. Hugh (Claudette), Riverview, NB; sons, Alec (Kathleen McDonnell), Toronto, Dr. James (Liliane Sayegh), Montreal, and Dr. Donald (Dr. Kathryn Myers), London; daughters, Sarah (Randy Sutherland), Guelph, Megan (David Graves), Halifax, Anaya (Donald Carrier), Stratford, and Katherine (Robert Lalonde), Scarborough; thirteen grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. As a young man, he was an outstanding varsity athlete who excelled at track, basketball, football and baseball. He graduated from Dalhousie University in 1947 and from Pine Hill Divinity Hall in 1951. After ordination in the United Church of Canada, he was called to a succession of pastorates in Nova Scotia (Lockeport, Baddeck, Sydney River, and St. Matthew's, Halifax), Ontario (First-St. Andrew's, London), and Quebec (St. Andrew's-Dominion Douglas, Montreal), concluding his full-time ministry at Zion United Church, Liverpool, NS in 1991. As a member of the United Church Committee on Christian Faith, he helped to craft the United Church Creed in 1968. At the 23rd Plenary Assembly of the Canadian Jewish Congress in 1992, Alex was presented with an Award of Merit in recognition of devoted leadership in the cause of the liberation of Soviet Jewry. Throughout his ministry he exemplified the blend of personal faith and social action. Visitation at Atlantic Funeral Home, 6552 Bayers Rd. on Friday, March 14, 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at Edgewood-Oxford United Church, Halifax, on Saturday, March 15, at 10:00 A.M. conducted by Rev. David Hann and Rev. Ted Thompson followed by a Reception. A service will be held at Newport United Church, Brooklyn, Hants County, the same afternoon at 3:00 p.m. conducted by Rev. Hugh Farquhar prior to burial in Brooklyn.
