Frederick Davidson Orchard STILLWATER LAKE, NS - Frederick Davidson Orchard, 63, of Stillwater Lake passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008 surrounded by his loving family followed by a brief but difficult battle with cancer. Fred was born in Moncton, N.B., to the late Oswald Frederick and Helen (Davidson) Orchard. He served in the Canadian Navy for 12 years and joined the Canadian National Railway in 1974, retiring in 1999. Not one to sit idle, following retirement, he worked for the Progressive Rail in Montreal and Kentucky, New Brunswick East Coast Railway in Campbellton, and as a real estate broker for Century 21 in Lower Sackville. In the past year, Fred enjoyed working with the Canadian Corp of Commissionaires at the Halifax Port of Authority. Throughout his career, Fred earned the respect and friendship of everyone he met. Fred was a past recipient of the President's Award of Excellence from the Canadian National Railway. He was also past president of the Riverview, NB., Kinsmen Club. Fred was devoted to his family. His children could always count on him to be there when they needed him. This would include late-night "taxi" service where he heard all but told nothing. Fred loved playing Santa for his family and friends and was an avid gardener. He loved traveling, especially to Las Vegas. Fred concluded his life as he lived it, concerned about his family rather than himself. Fred is survived by his wife, the former Ethel Laybolt, his loving wife of 40 years; sons, Kevin (Brenda), Moncton; Kory (Pam), Lantz; daughter, Kim (Paul) Barry, Cambridge, ON; grandchildren, Melissa, John, Papa's special man Ben and another grandchild due in June; sisters, Fran Stewart, Halifax; Barbara (Ron) Law, Calgary; Aunt Grace Orchard, Bridgetown; Aunt Elva Orchard, Norton, N.B.; numerous nieces and nephews. Fred enjoyed the companionship of many close friends, especially Victor and Shirley Feaver and Frank and Jeanette Stone. The family would like to extend special thanks to the doctors and nursing of staff of 8A at the Victoria General Hospital and his niece Barbara Stewart. Cremation has taken place under the direction of the Ronald A. Walker Funeral Homes. A memorial service will be held 1 pm Thursday March 20th in St. Luke's United Church, Upper Tantallon. Rev. Kevin Little officiating. Burial will follow at a later date. Family flowers only. Donations in Fred's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.
