Born in Chatham, NB, she was the eldest daughter of the late Noonan and Theresa (nee Holt) Maher. Doris received her early education at St. Michael's Academy in Chatham. Upon graduation she went to Montreal where she obtained her Registered Nursing Degree from Royal Victoria Hospital in 1936. We as family heard many stories of the wonderful retirement years they had together. Ten years prior to official retirement, Doris and her team organized the Association of Physician's Services of Nova Scotia at the Victoria General Hospital. Doris was also a great supporter of the Canadian Cancer Society and spent many years volunteering in the role of canvasser, canvas organizer and held the position of First Vice-President of the Halifax Unit.
