Arnold G. Mercer

Arnold G. Mercer Arnold G. Mercer, 82, of Moncton, with his family at his side, passed away peacefully at the Moncton Hospital on Friday, August 1, 2008. Born in Port Elgin, he was the son of the late Gordon and Annie (Bayliss) Mercer. Arnold was a retired mechanical superintendent with Moncton Crushed Stone (45 years service) and was a member of Sunny Brae Baptist Church. Arnold was an avid fiddler and was self taught as a young man. The first tune he learned was "Little Brown Jug" and he never looked back. His all-time favorite fiddler was Don Messer, along with favorites Ivan Hicks, Harold O'Donnell and Earl Mitton. He entered fiddling contests all around the Maritimes, Ontario and Vermont. He not only played the fiddle, he played the guitar, accordion, mouth organ and helped others along the way to play an instrument. He helped to get the New Brunswick Fiddle Doos & Pot Lucks started by organizing the ones held at Lutz Mountain Meeting House. These Fiddle Doos have since spread throughout New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. He also was a volunteer fiddler at benefit concerts and entertained for senior citizens. Arnold was a quiet, shy man, yet he made a major contribution to the preservation and promotion of old-tyme fiddling in his own special way. Along with his music, he found time to play hockey, softball, golf, hunt and fish. Arnold will be sadly missed by his wife, Olive Mercer; stepchildren, Ronald Steeves (Claudette), Salisbury, Ralph Steeves, Toronto, Donna Ferrara (Bill), Boston, Donna Ricker (Bev), Indian Mountain, Ellen Rogers, Moncton, Emery Rogers (Marilyn), Codys; several step grandchildren; three step great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, predeceased by his first wife, Hazel (Alward) Mercer (1998). Visitation at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995), Sunday, 2 to 5 pm. Funeral service, Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home Chapel, Monday, August 4, 2008, 1:00 pm, Pastor Chet MacPhail officiating. Reception following the service. Interment, Maplewood Cemetery, Petitcodiac.
