Fred Earl Lowery 1909-2008 Fred Earl Lowery, 99, of Halifax, passed away in Windsor Elms, Windsor, December 4, 2008, just weeks short of his 100th birthday. Born January 1, 1909 in Moncton, N.B., he was a son of the late Stan and Margaret Lowery. He had been a resident of Windsor Elms for the past two and a half years. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Cora. He is survived by his son, Richard "Rick" (Nancy), Halifax; grandchildren, Murray Lowery-Simpson (Kelly), Hanwell, N.B.; Karen Service (Paul), Halifax and Andrew Lowery (Mandy), Dartmouth and great-grandchildren, Hannah, Kirsten, and Rebecca Simpson, Hanwell and Boden Lowery, Dartmouth. Fred spent his entire working career with the Canadian National Railways, retiring at the age of 65. After graduating from Moncton High School, he began his career in Moncton and transferred three times between Moncton and Halifax, before settling permanently in Halifax in the late 1940s. While with the CNR, he was employed in various office/administration positions, most notably in the latter years in the freight sales area, which for several years, required him to travel throughout Nova Scotia. He was a dedicated sports fan, and was known for his quick wit and sense of humour. His greatest interest and talent was in the realm of music. He was an accomplished pianist and singer. As a younger man, he played the piano for a number of bands and orchestras in concerts, for dances, and for radio broadcasts. As a singer, he was a member of the First Baptist Church Choir and Men's Chorus and Barbershops groups, particularly the Atlantic Swells. Barbershop singing was his greatest enjoyment, and he participated until he was well into his 90s. He gave his last public performance as a pianist at age 90. In 1983, he was named Barbershoper of the Year in recognition of his contributions, especially in the role of Secretary of the Association. The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to the entire staff of Windsor Elms for the love, kindness and care extended to Fred during his time there. Visitation will be held Sunday, December 7th, 2-4:30 p.m. in Snow's Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor St., in Halifax.
