S. Douglas (Doug) Whitman

S. Douglas (Doug) Whitman S. Douglas (Doug) Whitman, 86, of Moncton, with his wife and family at his side, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Sunday, December 7, 2008. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, he was the son of the late Harry O. and Ivy (Stone) Whitman. Doug grew up in Moncton and spent most of his adult life in the Greater Moncton area. He was employed at the Canadian National Railway and VIA Rail in the rail passenger operations. With a life-long love of nature and the outdoors, he was a founding member and president of the Moncton Naturalists' Club and was also a founding member of the NB Naturalists' Federation. As a self-trained ornithologist, his observations and records on birds in New Brunswick and British Columbia were highly respected. Doug will be sadly missed by his wife, Phyllis (Gray) (Field) Whitman; daughter, Cheryl Shannon (Bill), Riverview; sons, Alan (Gretchen), Okanagan Falls, BC, Richard (Janet), Wolfville, NS, David (Mary), Ottawa, ON; 11 grandchildren; six great grandchildren; brother, Gordon, Oak Point, NB; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Loris (Higgs) (1984); sisters, Alberta, Ivy; brothers, Harry, Archie. No visitation by personal request. Funeral service, Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home Chapel, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995), Thursday, December 11, 2008, 10:30 am, Rev. Mary Anningson officiating. Reception following the service. Interment, Wesley Union Cemetery, Riverview. In Doug's memory, donations to the Moncton Naturalists' Club or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
