James William "Gerald" Smith
James William "Gerald" Smith 1920 - 2009 Port LaTour, Shelburne County, passed away at the Yarmouth Regional Hospital on Friday, January 9, 2009, at the age of 88 years. Born in Port LaTour on August 13, 1920, he was a son of the late Guilford and Leona (Swaine) Smith. Gerald was a veteran of the Second World War, serving with the 14th Anti-Aircraft Battery. During this time, he met his future wife, Kathleen Hayes of St. John's NL. Following the war , he worked for the Department of Transpor at the LORAN Station in Baccaro, Shelburne County until his retirement in December, 1979. Gerald enjoyed travel, camping, golf, music, dancing, walking, bird watching and reading.. In all respects , Gerald was a true gentleman to all that knew him. He loved nature and wildlife and had a keen sense of humour and wit. Gerald will be deeply missed by his children; Richard (Rev. Galen) Smith, Rexton NB and Keith Smith and June Nielson of Port LaTour; grandchildren, Sean and Eric Nielson, Kimberley Duncan and Matthew Smith; five great grandchildren and special friend, Shirley Malone. Gerald was predeceased by his wife, Kathleen (Kay), infant son, Gerald; brother Howard Smith and sister, Claire Snow. Cremation has taken place under the direction of H. Huskilson's Funeral Home, Barrington. In accordance with Gerald's wishes, there will be no funeral service or visitation at the Funeral Home. A committal service will be held at a later date. No flowers by request. Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Alzheimers Society or to the Canadian Wildlife Federation would be appreciated.
