John 'Francie' MacLeod

60, Glace Bay John ' Francie' MacLeod, 60, of Tanya Drive, Glace Bay passed away Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at the Glace Bay Hospital. Born in Glace Bay, Francie was the son of the late John and Frances (Fry) MacLeod. He was a choir member and steward at Warden United Church, Glace Bay. Francie was employed as an iron worker in the local area and later joined Devco as a mine mechanic. He was employed with Devco for nearly 20 years working in No. 26, Prince and Phalen mines. Francie loved to work in his garden and do mechanical work on his vehicles. But mostly, he will be remembered as a caring and loving husband and father. Francie is survived by his wife, the former Betty Brushett; one daughter, Christine and her husband Adam Vint, Halifax; one brother, Angus (Joyce), Glace Bay; and three sisters, Anna (Joe) Dorshe, Catherine Weiler, Joan (Ronnie) McIlveen, all in Ontario. Francie's mother passed away while he was an infant and he was raised by his great aunt Mary Ferguson and his cousin Elizabeth Duder, Glace Bay. Besides his parents, Francie was predeceased by one son, John Francis Jr., a brother, John Edward 'Junior', sister, Mary Wadden 'Sis' and his great aunt, Mary Ferguson. Visitation will be held Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral service officiated by Rev. Clayton Austin is Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Warden United Church, Glace Bay, followed by interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. A reception will take place in the church hall. Francie will be taken to the church at noontime Tuesday. As an expression of sympathy for Francie, donations in his memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation, Warden United Church or the ALS Foundation.
