Edith 'Edie' McGillivary

81, Dominion Edith McGillivary, age 81, of Royal Avenue, Dominion, and a former resident of 1-B Road, Glace Bay, passed away on Monday, Nov. 24, 2008, at her home in Dominion. Born in Glace Bay, she was the daughter of the late Jack 'Cy' and Catherine 'Kate' (Hurley) McDonald. Edie was a member of St. Eugene's Church, Dominion and always practised a strong devotion to her faith. She loved going to flea markets, yard sales and playing bingo. Her greatest passion was the love and care she shared with her family. Compassionate and thoughtful by nature, Edie always enjoyed family gatherings, special occasions and a good feed of lobsters. Edie is survived by her best friend and husband of 62 years, Bernie McGillivary; two daughters, Marie (Emilio) Vaninetti, Dominion, Barbara (Leo) Carrigan, Gardiner Mines, and one son, Cordell (Linda), Sydney. Also surviving are siblings, Pat (Jean) McDonald, Lorraine Abbott, Genieve (John) Lee, all in Glace Bay; and seven grandchildren, Nadine and Gina Vaninetti, Michael Carrigan (Sherri), Liesje Carrigan, Angela, Aimee and Ryan McGillivary. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. Edie was predeceased by two brothers, Allie 'Cy', Johnny and three sisters, Catherine Nicholson, Dorothy Clarke and Brenda Murphy. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. The funeral mass officiated by Rev. Gerald Campbell is Friday, 11 a.m. in St. Eugene's Church, Dominion. All are invited to join the family for a reception in the church hall. Cremation to follow with interment at a later date in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens. As an expression of sympathy for Edie, donations in her memory may be made to a charity of one's choice.
