90, Sydney Mines It is with broken hearts that the family of Sarah Catherine 'Kay' (MacDonald) Serroul, of Sydney Mines, announce her passing on Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2008, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney. Born in North Sydney on Sept. 27, 1918, Kay was the daughter of the late Colin and Mary (Sampson) MacDonald. She was the oldest of 10 children. Kay was a member of St. Pius X parish, Sydney Mines. She was also a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Sydney Mines, and the Florence fire hall ladies auxiliary. Kay met her soulmate, Joe, while still a teenager, a handsome man who truly adored her. Their secret wedding was a romantic tale she retold again and again. Together they had 13 children and were married for 62 years, until Joe's death 11 years ago. Kay's children and grandchildren will remember her as a loving and supportive woman who made them laugh (her sense of humour was second to none), encouraged them in their successes and helped them through the rough spots in life. She lit up a room with her smile and laughter and made the best tea biscuits anyone could ever imagine. Kay thought her greatest legacy was her children and she loved their phone calls and visits. In her later years, when she wasn't stirring up mischief, she could be found sitting around a campfire, playing cards with the girls on a Friday night and dancing around the kitchen with one of her great-grandchildren. She loved shopping, worried about her wrinkles and told amazing stories of her adventures. She was the heart of her family. Kay leaves behind to cherish her memory, daughters, Margie (Freeman) Bonnar, Sydney Mines, Kay (Eddie) Blanchard, Sydney, Beverly (Mike) Hemmings, Sydney, Rosie (Frank) Barassa, Ontario, Mona (Darryl) Bennett, Sydney Mines, Frances (Ron) Britten, Timberlea; sons, Tom (Caroline), Pickering, Ont., Pat (Lenore), Whitby, Ont., Leo (Eileen), Sydney, Robert (Shirley), Ajax, Ont., Donnie (Cathy), Niagara Falls, Ont.; 45 grandchildren; 90 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; brother, Charlie (Bernice), North Sydney; many nieces and nephews and special friends, Cora and Glen Musgrave. She was predeceased by her loving husband, William Joseph Serroul, sons, Jack and Joseph (Noonie), grandchildren, Wayne and Mary, sister, Tina and brothers, Raymond, Ed, Collie, Lloyd, Paul, Cyril and Russell. She will be missed and not soon forgotten. Visitation for Kay will be held Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines. The funeral mass will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. in St. Pius X Church, Sydney Mines, with Fr. J.J. MacDonald officiating. Burial to follow in the parish cemetery. A sincere thank-you for the help and kindness given to Kay is extended to the staff of the Northside General Hospital renal dialysis unit.
