June 23, 1923-Nov. 27, 2008 With regret, the family of Elnor Thompson announces her death in Baddeck Hospital on Nov. 27, 2008. Elnor Matilda (Grandy) Thompson was born near Truro to Olive Winnifred (Carr) Grandy and Arthur Charles Grandy on June 23, 1923. He early adult life was spent as a wife, mother and business partner at Thompson Bros. Roofing and Siding Ltd. in Amherst and New Glasgow. In 1973, Elnor/Mattie began anew in Saskatchewan with her much beloved partner, George Gordon. She obtained her B.Ed from the University of Regina and taught at the South Regina Nursery School. In 1989 she moved to Cape Breton to be near her grandchildren and established Elnor's Preschool in Indian Brook, Victoria County. Elnor loved kids, social justice, CBC radio, books, dogs, horses, gardens, car rides, travel, food and rocks. She disliked diamond rings, mink coats, perfume, racism, TV and movies. She seldom made waves herself but she supported those who did. Elnor was an active non-driver, but if there was a meeting and she could find a ride, she was there. She is survived by her daughter, Marion Thompson (John Roberts); granddaughters, Anna and Kate Roberts; sisters, Helen Luard and Pheobe Stevens, by Helen and Bonnie Thompson and many loving nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son, Philliip, daughter, Joanne Kohout, partner, George Gordon, former husband, Frank Thompson and sisters, Marion Slaven, Betty MacKay and Gwen Dickey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Victoria County Memorial Hospital Charitable Foundation. Visitation will take place at St. Ann's Bay United Church, Monday, Dec. 1, 2008, between 2-3 p.m. followed immediately by a celebration of Elnor's life to be officiated by Dianne Kempt, DLM.
