CAMERON, EDNA C. - 1918 - 2009 - Fredericton - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Edna Cameron, on Sunday, August 2, 2009, at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital, Fredericton, following a brief illness. Born in Black River Bridge, New Brunswick, on January 20, 1918, Edna was a resident of the Miramichi area for 86 years. For the past five years, she resided at St. Anne's Court Retirement Community, in Fredericton. Edna was the daughter of the late Alexander and Elizabeth (Stothart) Macdougall. Aside from her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William F. Cameron; her brother, Douglas and her sister, Elizabeth, who died at a very young age. She is survived by her only daughter, Betty (Richard) Comeau, of Fredericton; grandchildren Craig (Debbie) Comeau, of Fredericton and Jana Comeau (George Hector), of Saint John; sisters, Helen Horner, of Victoria, B.C. and Margaret Macdougall, of Fredericton; three great grandchildren, three step great grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. Edna was well known and respected as an educator. She was a graduate of Provincial Normal School and St. Thomas University and spent her career working as a teacher, vice principal and district supervisor. Upon her retirement, in 1974, she continued to serve on the School Board and dedicated significant time to the advancement of adult literacy. She also remained a contributing member of the New Brunswick Teachers Association, Miramichi Retired Teachers Association and the Canadian Council of Teachers. Edna made a notable contribution to the communities in which she lived. A member of the Provincial Library Board, she was instrumental in the establishment of the Chatham Public Library. A life long member of the Silver Link Rebecca Lodge, she also served as President of the Rebecca Assembly of the Atlantic Provinces. She was appointed by the Premier to the New Brunswick Advisory Council for the Status of Women and in 1994, she was made a Freeman of the Town of Chatham. Edna also served on the Board of Directors for the Miramichi Senior Citizens Home and was an active member of the I.O.D.E. She was a proud supporter of many local charities, and contributed much of her time to humanitarian causes. A woman of deep faith, Edna was an active and dedicated member of Calvin Presbyterian Church, where she assumed various leadership roles. She served as President of the Women's Missionary Society, Eastern Division, Atlantic Provinces. Her sense of service, particularly to society's most vulnerable, never wavered. Visitation will be at Adams Funeral Home Ltd., 140 King St., Miramichi, on Friday, August 7, 2009, from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. The funeral service will be held from Calvin Presbyterian Church, Miramichi, on Saturday, August 8, 2009, at 11 am, conducted by Rev. Derek Krunys. Interment will be in the Black River Community Cemetery.
