DORIS IRENE SHORTEN
SHORTEN, DORIS IRENE - Doris Shorten of Moncton, passed away on Thursday, November 19, 2009 at the Moncton Hospital with her family at her side. She was born 'earlier' in the last century in New Waterford, N.S. She was the daughter of the late Margaret (Skidmore) MacKay and the late William MacKay and was predeceased by her seven siblings - sisters Leona, Marjorie and Beryl and brothers Corliss, Kenneth, Kelvin and Russell. Doris was a graduate of the Halifax Children's Hospital and met her husband, the late Commander Harry Shorten, at a reception onboard HMCS Haida in Halifax harbor in wartime. Life in the navy meant many moves. Daughter Debbie (husband Robert Scott and daughter Brittany - Fredericton N.B.) was born in Churchill, Manitoba and daughter Janet (husband Tom Foster - Denver, Colorado) was born in Ottawa. They also lived in England, Virginia, and a number of locations across Canada. In 1969 the family moved to Moncton and Doris became involved with many community organizations. She served on the Board of the YWCA and was involved in the Christmas Boutique and the Quilt Fair for many years. She was a long time member of ITC - and was a Toastmistress. She also enjoyed serving on the Moncton Symphony Committee and Foundation. She was an ardent Liberal and was a member of the Moncton South Women's Liberal Association as well as the Federal Liberal Party. Doris lived life to the fullest and was always open for a new adventure involving family and friends or a lively debate about politicians. Her independent spirit helped her to remain active in her later years, even operating the snowblower in her eighties! In addition to Debbie and Janet and their families, Doris is also survived by her dear friend Anita Connors, and many nieces and nephews. At her request there will be no visitation. Committal services will be held in Cape Breton at a later date. The family wishes to thank the compassionate Doctors and nursing staff at Moncton Hospital for their excellent care - particularly Dr. Eva Eros (Doris's family physician), Drs. Blanchard, Burton and Phalen and 3600 nurses and support staff. In memory of Doris, donations to Friends of the Moncton Hospital or Calvin United Church in New Waterford, Cape Breton would be appreciated. Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) in care of arrangements. Online condolences at www.fergusonknowlesfh.com
