JOAN DRISDELLE

DRISDELLE, JOAN - Joan, 89, of Moncton, passed away peacefully Tuesday December 22, 2009 at the Moncton Hospital. Born May 24, 1920 in Keels, Bonavista Bay, Nfld., she was the daughter of the late Michael and Jane (Coleman) Murphy. She is predeceased by her husband, Clarence; her sisters: Ede, Nell and Ann, and her brothers: Raymond, Cyril, Bernard and Jack. She is also predeceased by a daughter-in-law, Claudette. Joan graduated from Memorial College in St John's in 1939 with her teacher's certificate, and taught in various schools around Newfoundland. After the war she worked for eight years on the US air force base in Goose Bay Labrador, where she met Clarence. They married in Goose Bay and eventually settled in his hometown of Moncton. Joan worked at the Unemployment Insurance offices for 18 years, retiring in the early 1980's. Joan was an active and gregarious person. She loved cross-country skiing, painting and her trailer at KOK campground. She volunteered at the Ray of Hope Soup Kitchen and St Vincent de Paul for several years. Her Irish heritage and Newfoundland upbringing instilled strong ties with family and the church. And being a true Newfoundlander, she never lost touch with her down home values, as shown in her love of social gatherings, family events, a stiff drink, a good card game and any news from the rock. She is survived by her four sons: Edward (Patricia Belliveau) and Brian (Penny) both of Moncton, Terrence (Darlene) of Dartmouth, NS, John (Monique) of Timberlea, NS; six grandchildren: Julie, Robert, Lisa, Kimberly, Sean and Sara; as well as several nieces and nephews. She will also be sadly missed by her dear friends Denise, Dina and Simone. A special thank you to Dr. Christine Telfer. The family will receive condolences at Frenette's Funeral Home, 88 Church Street, Moncton (858-1900) on Tuesday December 29 from 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 p.m, Wednesday, from 9:30 a.m. until departure (10:15) The funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Augustine's R.C.
