Mary (Dalton) Smith

Born: October 17th, 1916

Passed in: SYDNEY, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: March 2nd, 2010

On March 2, 2010, God called one of His angels home. Mary (Dalton) Smith, 93, of St. Peters Road, Sydney, passed away at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after suffering a stroke. She has completed God’s work here on earth and it is time for her to rest.
Anyone who knew mom recognized her devout spirituality. She had the gift of faith, and prayer was part of her daily life. Her prayer beads were always in use as she prayed for those in need. We, her family, friends and relatives, are grateful for the many years we were blessed with Mom’s presence and love. She was an exceptional mother and instilled in us, her children, the values, morals and strength of character that will carry us through our lives. We take comfort in the belief that she is at peace.
She was a member of Holy Redeemer parish.
In her younger years, Mom worked as a caregiver at the Harbourview Guest Home in Whitney Pier, where she spread joy, laughter and a deep sense of tenderness for the elderly clients who were in her care. She loved a good joke and was a formidable opponent in a game of cards. She was blessed with good health and a clear mind until her final days.
She was predeceased by her precious daughter, Lorraine Frances Dalton at age seven; her first husband, James P. Dalton in 1975; her second husband, Donald C. Smith in 2003; her parents, Stephen and Catherine (MacDonald) MacNeil; sisters, Catherine MacNeil, Delores (Dodie) Keough; and brother, Stephen MacNeil.
She is survived by her sisters, Lolie Chretien, Toronto, Ont. and Ella Strickey, Sydney.
She will be sadly missed by her children, Robert (Joan) Dalton, Hamilton, Ont., Gary (Brenda) Dalton, Sydney, Daniel Dalton, Sydney, Linda (Leonard) Bryden, Castle Bay, Elaine (Gary) Evely, Sydney and Sandra Dalton, Red Deer, Alta.; stepchildren, Donald Jr. (Connie), James (Nancy), Robert (Patricia), Martin, Catherine (Raymond) Antle, all from Sydney and Lou (Tom) Jones, South Bar. Between both families, she had 23 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
She will be dearly missed by her friends and neighbors, Mary Peterson, Susan and Raymond Young, Dale and George Leyte and her nieces and nephews.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Church on Saturday, March 6 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Errol MacDonald officiating. Following cremation, interment will be held at Resurrection Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Holy Redeemer Building Fund.
Condolences may be sent to the family at sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
