It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth ‘Toots’ Redmond, Glace Bay. Toots passed away on Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at the Glace Bay Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Left to cherish her memory are son, Robbie (Darlene), Stewiacke, N.S.; daughter, Pat (Joe) Coady, Charlottetown, P.E.I. and son, Kelly, Glace Bay; grandsons, Matthew, Daniel and Breton Redmond, Jason (Kim), Jonathan Coady; great-granddaughter, Marley Elizabeth Coady and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Alexander and Mary (Dwyer) McLean, she was predeceased by her husband, John W. Redmond; infant daughter, Anne; her sisters, Mary Blois and Sarah Cote; brothers, Alexander and Daniel McLean and granddaughter, Jennifer Coady.
Toots graduated from St. Joseph’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1941 and enlisted in the army. She attained the rank of lieutenant. After the war, Toots returned to Glace Bay where she remained a lifelong resident. She was a member of Holy Cross Parish, Glace Bay and was also a member of St. Joseph’s Hospital Nurse’s Alumnae.
Visitation will be held Thursday, March 4, 2010, 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated 2 p.m. on Friday, March 5, 2010 at Holy Cross Church with Fr. Conrad Edwards officiating. Interment will be in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Glace Bay.
If so desired, memorial donations in Toots’ memory may be made to Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton or a charity of choice.
