John Baptiste 'Erwin' Petrossie

Bras d'Or 1938-2009 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Baptiste 'Erwin' Petrossie, 70, on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2009, at the Northside General Hospital. Born in Bras d'Or, he was the son of the late Ella Petrossie, who died when he was an infant. He was raised by his aunt, Mary O'Neil, who raised him as her own son. He was a member of St. Joseph parish, Bras d'Or. Erwin worked for the Canadian Coast Guard for many years until his retirement in 1993. He loved listening to fiddle music and spending time with family and friends. Erwin is survived by his wife, Mary Agnes (Young) Petrossie, Bras d'Or; daughter, Ella (Steve) Devoe, Barrie, Ont.; sons, John (Diana), Bras d'Or, Calvin (Helen), Barrie, Ont., Lee (Cara), Bras d'Or, and Chris (Dawn), George's River. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren. Besides his mother, Ella, and Aunt Mary, he was predeceased by a brother, Roger Verding. Special thanks to the many caretakers of the Cape Breton County Home Care for the many years of special care to our beloved father. Visitation for John Petrossie will be held in the J. M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2009, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Church, Bras d'Or, with Fr. Peter MacLeod officiating. Memorial donations in John's memory may be made to the Nova Scotia Heart and Stroke Foundation.
