Leslie Stuart Byers
Truro - In loving memory of Leslie Stuart Byers of Truro, aged 88 years, peacefully passed away March 14, 2010, in hospital, Truro. Born in Salmon River on Dec 13, 1921, son of late Lester and Susan (Lawson) Byers. Survived by beloved wife Sadie (McIntyre), son Gerald, daughter Linda, and brother Gordon (Aileen Lloyd) and families. Predeceased by siblings Eugene (Vera Nichols), Alice (Jim Thompson), Aileen (Ralph Garland). Les Byers was raised in Salmon River, working with his father and older brothers in their farm dairy delivery business, later working in the family-owned Byers Market grocery business at two locations on Prince Street, Truro. He then operated Western Tire & Auto Supplies with his brother Eugene (Gene) Byers. Les was also agent for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. The brothers then sold the supply business, the building being amalgamated with A.J. Walker & Sons, Ltd. where Les (with Gene) was employed with that firm until his subsequent retirement. Les Byers was a good man as husband, father, provider and in all else that he did. His great loves besides family were: fishing Tangier Grand Lake and its rivers, summers at Brule Point cottage, his boat, cars and trucks over the years, and enjoying later life at the ancestral farm on Millbrook Road, New Annan. Les Byers was a 60-year member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF), advancing through the degrees to Noble Grand, dedicating a life of fellowship and service to the IOOF's good works. Cremation completed, a family committal service to be held at a later date in Bell Gift Cemetery, New Annan. Donations in honour of Les Byers can be gratefully made to the First United Church, 711 Prince Street, Truro. In the meantime, he's already up and gone fishin' with Gene.
