ALLEN, Donald Lee – 88, of Forest Glen, Yarmouth Co., passed away March 13, 2010, in Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born in Forest Glen on February 26, 1922, he was a son of the late Benjamin and Rhoda (Mullen) Allen. Don was a great lover of oxen, and in 1969, he won the World Championship Ox-Haul at the Western Nova Scotia Exhibition. He was employed with Nova Scotia Light & Power Company Ltd. from 1967 until his retirement in 1986. He was also an outdoorsman, and loved hunting, trout fishing and working in his vegetable garden. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He is survived by nephews, Eric Allen, Forest Glen; Gerald Allen, Brenton; Garth Allen, Deerfield; Benny Allen, Forest Glen; Lloyd (Sharon) Allen, North Kemptville; Lawson (Judy) Allen, North Kemptville; Dougie (Carolyn) Allen, North Kemptville; Darrell (Myrna) Allen, North Kemptville; James (Hilda) Allen, Carleton; nieces, Carmen Allen, B.C.; Darlene (Fred) Durkee, Milton Highlands; Fayelene Allen, Wedgeport; Linda Mullen, New Minas; Audrey (John) Manzer, Bridgewater; Kathleen (Paul) Wells, Forest Glen; Joyce Burton, Lake George; Doreen (Johnny) Muise, North Kemptville; and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews. He was predeceased by sisters, Zella Evelyn, Edna and Eleanor; brothers, Fred, Albert, George, Lloyd and Earl; nephews, Earl and Glendon; great-nephews, Tyler and Devon. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home & Cremation Services, Yarmouth. Visitation took place Monday, March 15 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service was held Tuesday, March 16 at 2 p.m. Rev. Don Moses officiated. Both took place in Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. Interment followed in Forest Glen Cemetery. Following the interment, there was a reception at Forest Glen Community Center. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
