Timothy O'Flaherty

89, Sydney Tim O'Flaherty, 89, passed away peacefully Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born in Newfoundland, he was the son of the late James and Jenny O'Flaherty. Tim worked at the coke ovens Sydney Steel for 46 years until his retirement in 1982. He was a longtime alter server at St. Joseph's Church, Sydney. He is survived by his wife, Rita (Fewer) of 67 years; his three grandchildren, Tracey (Donald), Christine (Jason), Timothy (Jennifer); by two great-grandchildren, Chelsey Dawn and Deven; and daughter-in-law, Eunice. Tim is also survived by brother, Jim (Theresa), Ottawa; and stepbrothers, Tom (Lillian), Kingston, Ont., James, British Columbia, Martin Carroll (Betty), Sydney; and stepsister, Mary Flannigan, Sydney. Beside his parents, he was predeceased by his son, Dennis, brothers, Michael, Cecil and sister, Nellie. He will also be missed by numerous nieces and nephews. At Tim's request there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation has taken place with burial to follow at a later date. A reception in honour of Tim's life will take place Tuesday, Jan. 27 from 1-3 p.m. at Richard Hines Manor, MacGillivray Apartments, 27 Xavier Dr., Sydney, N.S.
