60, North Sydney It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Charlie MacMillan in a skiing accident on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009, while vacationing in British Columbia with his daughter. Born in North Sydney, Dec. 25, 1948, Charlie was the son of the late Norman and Frances (Young) MacMillan. After attending school in North Sydney he went to Xavier College in Sydney and later attended Saint Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, graduating with a bachelor of arts degree in 1973 and bachelor of education degree in 1974. While at St. FX, Charlie co-captained the X-Men varsity hockey team where he excelled at right wing. A well-known and beloved teacher he began his career at Fairview School. In 1979 Charlie accepted the position of radio and television broadcasting teacher at Memorial High, a position he held until his retirement in 2004. An avid sportsman Charlie enjoyed playing hockey, skiing, and touring on his motorcycle. He loved the water and was happiest while sailing with his friends and family on his cherished 'Hi Lady.' Left to mourn his passing are his beloved wife of 35 years, Diane (MacNeil); his daughter, Dr. Lindsay, Toronto; and son, Michael (Holly), North Sydney. Charlie is also survived by sisters, Mary Ann (Leo) Doyle, Kay (Mac) Batherson, Marg (Dave) Ratchford; brothers, John C. (Karen), Normie (Linda), Malcolm (Linda), all from the Northside, and Dennis (Mary Beth), Moncton; sisters-in-law, Joan Edwards, Sydney Mines, Barbara (Frank) Viva, Toronto; numerous nieces, nephews and many friends. Besides his parents, Charlie was predeceased by his father and mother-in-law, Hughie and Girlie MacNeil, brother-in-law, Jack Edwards and two brothers in infancy.
