It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of George Gerard Summers, 70, a resident of Scotch Lake Road, Georges River on Sunday, March 15, 2009, at his home following a short, but courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Toronto, Ont., George was the son of Lucille (Rodden) Summers of Scarborough and of the late George Summers Sr. of Glasgow Scotland.
He was an electrician by trade and he also owned and operated a power wash company for a number of years until his retirement. George moved to Cape Breton 19 years ago and loved living here on the island, he was an avid gardener, loved to cook, to tell jokes and was always willing to give a neighbour a helping hand. He was a member of St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or.
Surviving besides his mother is his wife, Sylvia (Beaton) Summers; his children, Ted (Leslee) Willems, Milton, Ont., Wendy (Scott) Bennett, New Market, Jack (Jill) Summers, Brampton; a stepson, Christopher Peddle, Brampton; daughter-in-law, Nancy Willems, Brampton, Ont.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two sisters, Barb (Jim) Smith, Scarborough, and Ellen (Vic) Robinson, Mississauga, Ont.; also a number of nieces and nephews, and his special friend, Brian Jessome.
Besides his father he was predeceased by a son, John Willems and a sister, Joan.
No visitation by request. A funeral mass will be celebrated 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Peter MacLeod officiating. Burial to take place in the parish cemetery at a later date.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice Palliative Care of Cape Breton or the Victorian Order of Nurses.
