Lloyd Ernest MacCarthy, 64 of Bayview, passed away March 13, 2009, in the Palliative Care Unit of Aberdeen Hospital, New Glasgow, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born February 28, 1945, in Pictou, Lloyd was a son of the late John “Jack” and Mary (Stewart) MacCarthy.
He was employed for 19 years with Northumberland Ferries Ltd. as an electrician, he previously worked with C.E. MacCarthy Limited, and Pictou Industries.
Lloyd was an active member of his community. He was a life member of the Pictou Kinsmen Club, holding all offices at the club level during his 30 plus years of involvement.
He was also a past member of the Pictou West Liberal Association. He was involved with the unions at Pictou Industries and C.A.W. Local 4508A representative for Northumberland Ferries. Lloyd was also a past member of the New Caledonia Curling Club, Pictou; and was past president of Pictou Minor Hockey, and Team Mom for many years.
He was a member the Board of Directors for Central Caribou Cemetery, Caribou District Fire Department, and Caribou Watershed Committee, up until the time of his illness. A member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou, he had served on their Board of Managers.
He also enjoyed spending time with his furry friends, Kelsey and grand-dog, Lily.
Lloyd was a devoted husband and father who was very dedicated to the many activities that his children were involved in.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Sharon (Ernst), his daughter, Kristine (Jason) MacMillan, Bayview; and his son, Paul, a student at Cape Breton University; brother, Tom (Shirley), their children, Kim, Darren and Adelle; sister-in-law, Doris (Ken) MacMillan, Pictou; nephew, Steven (Dale), nieces, Donna (Gary) and Michelle (Danny), Joyce, Bruce, and Brian (Sheila); special sister-in-law, Sheila and brother-in-law, Joe Martin, and their daughter, Audra.
He is also survived by his aunt, Elinor (MacCarthy) and uncle, Pat Murphy, aunt, Marguerite MacCarthy, and aunt, Eileen MacCarthy. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Fred, Lyle, and infant brother at birth, as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Visitation will be held 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Monday in McLaren Funeral Home, Pictou. Funeral service will take place 2 p.m. Tuesday from St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Pictou, with Jacquie Ross officiating. Donations in Lloyd’s memory may be made to the Caribou District Fire Department, or the Aberdeen Palliative Care Society.
