Passed peacefully away at St. Luke’s Homes on Saturday, March 14, Joyce Sybil Hall in her 91 year. Predeceased by her parents Ellen Leaper Hall and Frederick Gilbert Hall, sisters Gladys and Winifred, brothers, Rick and Norman. Left to mourn are her niece, Caryl Webb; nephew Roland Hall; great-niece Valda Gowing Schreiber; great-great-niece Gemma Gowing and great-great nephew Christopher Gowing of the United Kingdom/USA as well as her dear friends in Newfoundland. Also Miss Hall’s passing will be felt by hundreds of her students who in her classrooms over many years were inspired by both her teaching and her zest for life. She will be remembered with affection and gratitude.
Born in Stoodleigh, Devon, Joyce received her teacher’s training at the University of London (Stockwell College) with a distinction in art. She is also a graduate of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Joyce taught in England and New Zealand before joining the teaching staff of Bishop Spencer College in 1952. After the close of Spencer in 1972 she taught at Vanier School until she retired.
In accordance with Joyce’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A service to celebrate Joyce’s life will be held at the Carnell Memorial Chapel at a time and date to be announced. Special thanks to all her extraordinary caregivers at Pleasantview Terrace, St. Luke’s Home.
