Thomas James 'Jimmy' Matheson, 75, of New Aberdeen, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at Harbourstone Enchanced Care, Sydney, after a lengthy illness.
Born in Glace Bay, Jimmy was the son of the late Murdoch and Ida (Ward) Matheson.
He was a member of St. John the Baptist Church, Glace Bay.
Jimmy served with the United Nations Peace Force as a dental technician and visited many parts of the world on the Destroyer, Quebec. After service in Korea, he returned to Canada where he was struck down by illness which he endured until his death, ending a promising career in the military.
Jimmy is survived by his siblings, Delores Young, Glace Bay, Cammie (Barry Gillis), North Sydney, Ethel (John Tennant), Ottawa, Maria (James Tutty), Lower Sackville, Bernadette (Bill Dixon), Stouville, Ont., Ida (Ron Winstanley), Oxbridge, Ont., Beverly, Toronto, Wayne (Josie), Ottawa, Reeves (Valerie), Halifax, Bernard (Lois), Mississauga, Ray (Judy), Chatham, Ont., and several nieces and nephews.
Jimmy was predeceased by brothers, Gerald Robert, Vincent Paul, John Owen and Harold ‘Sonny’.
Cremation has taken place at the request of his family. A celebration of Jimmy’s life will be held at a later date in St. John’s Church, Glace Bay, followed by interment in the parish cemetery.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, Glace Bay, 902-849-4505.
